Make Your Own Miniature Books: Tiny Project, Big Joy!

There’s something magical about miniature books. They fit in the palm of your hand but still carry all the creativity and charm of a full-sized project. Whether you’re a crafter, journaler, dollhouse enthusiast, or just someone who loves small things (who doesn’t?), making mini books is pure joy.

This blog post is your jumping-off point. I’ve included a printable sheet of book covers you can use to create your own tiny library of books, composition notebooks, journals and much more! I’m also sharing some photos of my finished books for inspiration—and stay tuned: I’ll be dropping a full video tutorial next week to walk you through the process. You can subscribe to my YouTube channel here.

Let’s talk about mini books. How to make them, and what you can do with these little treasures.

Why Make Mini Books?

1. They’re fast, fun, and low-pressure.
Mini books are bite-sized creative projects. You can start and finish one in a few minutes sitting. There’s no big commitment—just enough space to play.

2. They’re great for scrap paper and ephemera.
If you’re someone who collects paper scraps, washi tape, stickers, or magazine clippings “just in case”—this is that case.

3. They make thoughtful gifts.
A mini book filled with affirmations, jokes, memories, or tiny art makes a sweet handmade gift. It's personal, lightweight, and made with care. Or if you choose to make a book that doesn’t open you can turn them into charms and pendants.

4. They’re satisfying to finish.
We don’t always get the thrill of a completed project in the tiny pockets of time we may have to create. A mini book gives you that satisfaction quickly and clearly. You made something. It’s done. It exists.

5. They’re just plain cute.
Let’s be real—tiny books are adorable. That’s enough reason to make them.

What You’ll Need

You don’t need fancy tools. Here’s the basics:

  • Scissors or craft knife

  • Glue stick or double-sided tape

  • Paper for pages (printer paper, scrap paper, or old book pages)

  • Printable mini covers (scroll down to download)

  • Cardstock or a cereal box for sturdy covers

  • Optional: thread and needle, stapler, washi tape, stickers, stamps

How to Make a Mini Book (Quick Overview)

In next week’s video tutorial, I’ll show you exactly how I made mine—but here’s a basic breakdown if you want to jump in now:

  1. Choose a cover.
Download and print the sheet of mini book covers (included below). Cut out the one you want to use. I’ve included book covers as well as composition notebook covers and some book titles in case you want to make slightly bigger ones.

  2. Cut your pages.
Stack 4–6 pieces of small paper (about the same size as your cover when folded). Fold the stack in half to form a booklet.

  3. Bind the pages.
Staple the fold, sew it with a simple stitch, or use glue at the spine. Whatever method feels easiest for you.

  4. Add the cover.
Glue the printed cover around your folded pages. Make sure it wraps cleanly along the spine.

  5. Customize.
Now fill it up! You can write tiny poems, doodle, collage, make lists, or keep it blank for future use.

  6. Without Pages
You can also choose to make these books without pages and just take a piece of foam board and wrap the cover around that. Or even a thick corrugated card will do. These versions are great for mini bookshelves or to turn into charms and pendants.

Ideas for What to Put Inside

Once you've got the hang of the basic structure, the fun is in how you use them. Here are a few creative ideas:

  • Mini quote book – fill with favorite quotes or affirmations

  • Pocket art journal – tiny sketches or mixed media pages

  • Zine-style storytelling – short comics or micro-memoirs

  • Tiny gratitude journal – one thing per page

  • Mini scrapbooks – add photos, stickers, and mementos

  • Spellbook or herb guide – perfect for witchy/druid vibes

  • Lists – favorite books, dreams, goals, songs, etc.

  • Pendants – Create them without the pages and turn them into sweet little pendants

  • Charms – With or without the pages, they will make cute junk journal charms.

Tips for Crafting Mini Books

  • Use a bone folder or spoon handle to get crisp folds.

  • Trim everything a little smaller than your cover so it fits neatly inside.

  • Reinforce the spine with washi tape or fabric if you're using heavier paper.

  • Don’t worry about perfection. Mini books are meant to be charming and a little wonky.
